Share: A moment from today when you felt close to God, and a moment when you felt far from God.
Read: 1 Thessalonians 5.17-18
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
Reflect: It’s hard to imagine constantly rejoicing, praying, giving thanks. There are many things for which we are not grateful, and things that don't seem worthy of rejoicing, and times we forget to pray. It seems naïve, like we are glossing over reality, to “rejoice always.” But remember that “hope is an orientation of the spirit”—that is what Paul is reminding us here. To orient ourselves toward what God has done and is doing will always lead us to gratitude. The very word “gratitude” has at its root the word “grace”—because of God’s grace, we are grateful. How have you experienced God’s grace? Can you orient your spirit toward grace today?
Pray: Make a list of ten things for which you are grateful today, and pray the list out loud.
