At the Threshold devotion: Wednesday March 19

Share: A moment from today when you felt close to God, and a moment when you felt far from God.

Read: John 13: 4-5

So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, and poured water into a basin.  Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him.

Reflect: George and Judy Craig write: We have both been doing foot washing during Lent for several years. What is so amazing is how each year, becoming a servant as Jesus, has been very emotional for us both. The reading, as we are washing each other’s feet, brings out overwhelming feelings, as we imagine what it would be like for the apostle’s having their feet washed by Jesus. We then are able to act as servants to the congregation in the same way Jesus did. At times, during the washing, our emotions have brought us to tears knowing how our Lord became a servant and knowing what events were going to happen in the coming days. This is always such a powerful experience for us both.

Pray: Think of a time when you have been moved by a scripture reading, an experience in worship, or in prayer. Call up that feeling, and ask God to touch your heart again, moving you to love, serve, or care more deeply.
