TOP: Morals, Feelings, Good Deeds...What Makes a Christian?

Is the purpose of Christian faith to instill a moral compass? to make us feel good? to empower us to do good? Something else entirely? Let's talk about why Christian faith and community matters, not only from our personal experience or cultural perspective, but according to scripture and our theological tradition too.

Theology Thursdays On the Patio take place at Emmett's (on Brockway in downtown Palatine), and are an evening of learning and fellowship through conversation. Part small-group, part Bible Study, part fun, TOP is a great way to go deeper as we think about how our faith affects our lives. Food and beverages are available for all budgets, and we always learn something!

TOP: Give Thanks In All Circumstances

Gratitude...is it an attitude? an action? something else? What are we grateful for, and when? what about when something bad happens? How can we practice gratitude without glossing over hard things, or invalidating grief or anger or other emotions people may experience? Join us on the patio to give thanks, and to think about thanks too.

TOP: Other Sheep Not Of This Fold

Jesus says he has other sheep not of this fold...who are those other sheep? How do "we" relate to "them"? What does it mean for us as Christians if Jesus is also lord of other sheepfolds?

TOP: Confession is Good for the Soul

We have a prayer of confession in our worship service every week. But...why? and what are we confessing? How else can or should we be offering our confessions? What's it all for anyway? Join us on the patio to talk about wrongs and rights, confession and forgiveness...all without any of us having to admit to anything we don't want to right now. ;-)

TOP: Faith in the Midst of Mental Illness

Approximately 1 in 5 people deals with some form of mental illness at some point during the course of a year. As people of faith, how do we handle mental health issues--whether they are our own, or those of people in our family or community? the old responses of "just pray" or "look on the bright side" or "God won't give you more than you can handle" are not helpful and they are also not faithful, ultimately. Let's talk about mental illness and how we continue to have faith in the midst of it.

TOP: Young People Today

"Kids these days!"

Who are these kids? Shat are these days? How are young people today different from young people of the past? What does it take to build an intergenerational community that looks like the kingdom of God? Come to the patio to talk about all these things and more!

Bible in 90 Days

Join us this summer as we journey through God's story from the beginning! It sounds daunting, but it's completely doable: reading about 12 pages per day, we can read the whole library of scripture over the course of just 90 days! We've even added a few catch-up days along the way so if someone gets behind, there's recovery possible!

The thing that makes this work best is when we all do it together--so we can support each other, ask our questions, talk about what we read, and encourage one another when the going gets tough. So grab a Bible (ideally NOT a study Bible, just a regular one without too many notes) and the calendar of readings and let's read!

We'll meet together on Monday evenings at the church, from 7-8:30pm, to talk about what we've read in the past week or so. The Sunday sermons will be taken from the sections scheduled for those Sundays.
