Worship Through Service

Not just a worship service--it's worship THROUGH service. After a time of gathering with a hymn sing, scripture reading, and prayer time, we break up into groups to serve God by serving our neighbors. We spend two hours volunteering helping local organizations that need things that are best done by large groups during a time when they are closed (i.e., Sunday morning)--things like deep cleaning and re-stocking, big yard work projects, etc. We also have things for people who are mobility-challenged or otherwise differently abled and can't leave the church building--those people can stay in the Cosby Room and assemble various things for different agencies to have on hand when someone comes by in need, or for encouraging our neighbors.

After we finish working, we come back together to share our experiences over lunch, provided by a local small business.

It's a day of glorifying God with our labor, serving our community, and building up the body. Everyone is welcome and we are prepared for all ages, abilities, and most dietary needs. If you need childcare or a particular dietary situation, please contact the office.

We are also collecting some items that will be donated to the various agencies we work with--if you're able to help, check the newsletter for the list, and bring your donations with you at 9am on Labor Day Sunday!

TOP: Can Faith Be Fun?

As we head into the long weekend that traditionally marks the end of summer, as well as marking our appreciation for those who worked to ensure that we could have reasonable and safe working hours and conditions, let's talk about fun! Faith is serious business, and God should never be taken lightly. But can it be fun too? There's plenty of humor in scripture, and we know God to be both creative and playful, so we'll be considering how we (who are made in the image of God) can be so as well.

Theology Thursdays On the Patio take place at Emmett's (on Brockway in downtown Palatine), and are an evening of learning and fellowship through conversation. Part small-group, part Bible Study, part fun, TOP is a great way to go deeper as we think about how our faith affects our lives. Food and beverages are available for all budgets, and we always learn something!

Feasting On The Word

We've finished the Bible in 90 Days! We'll celebrate during worship by gathering around tables to feast together on both breakfast casseroles and the word. The text for the day is the very last page of the Bible, Revelation 21, and we will reflect on all we've learned as we've spent the summer immersed in God's word. There will be singing, praying, listening, and learning alongside eating and drinking and celebrating.

Brunch will be provided, so just bring yourself and your appetite for fellowship, food, and praising the Lord!

AND there's a very special dessert that will overflow with goodness afterward!

TOP: When the Saints Go Marching In

For all the saints...I believe in the communion of saints...she's a saint...
Many of these songs and words are often associated with funerals. And yet they are not sad. Let's talk about the saints who have gone before us, and how we celebrate and remember. Who is a saint? Where are they marching? How can we be in that number? (Hint: saints aren't just for Roman Catholics!)

TOP: The E-word

Most of us in mainline protestant traditions have become allergic to the idea of "evangelism." The word conjures up pictures of street preachers, bible-beaters, hellfire and brimstone, tracts, and earnestly asking "are you saved?" We have ceded the word "evangelical" to a particular strain of Christian tradition that has become associated with a particular set of viewpoints. But the word actually means "messenger of good news"...aren't we all bearers of God's good news? Let's figure out how we can reclaim the E-word without the baggage.

TOP: Spiritual But Not Religious....and Religious But Not Spiritual?

Somewhere around a fifth to a quarter of the American population now say they are "none" when asked about their religious affiliation...but many of those say "I'm very spiritual." What does that mean exactly? And what about those of us who are religious?

TOP: Images of God

What does God look like? How has God been represented in art, film, and writing...and how do those portrayals affect our own image of God? The ways we talk about God can create pictures that affect our relationship with God...so let's talk about them!

TOP: Doubt

Do you ever doubt? Have questions? Wonder about things you don't understand? Ask yourself, or God, what on earth is going on here or if maybe we've gotten something terribly wrong? Look for signs or answers to help you on your way?

Doubt is a part of faith--not its opposite. So don't be shy, come out and talk about how we handle doubt even as we continue in faith.

TOP: Loaded Words

There are some words in both church life and in our culture that seem to carry a lot of baggage. We'll unpack that baggage tonight!

Bible in 90 Days

Join us this summer as we journey through God's story from the beginning! It sounds daunting, but it's completely doable: reading about 12 pages per day, we can read the whole library of scripture over the course of just 90 days! We've even added a few catch-up days along the way so if someone gets behind, there's recovery possible!

The thing that makes this work best is when we all do it together--so we can support each other, ask our questions, talk about what we read, and encourage one another when the going gets tough. So grab a Bible (ideally NOT a study Bible, just a regular one without too many notes) and the calendar of readings and let's read!

We'll meet together on Monday evenings at the church, from 7-8:30pm, to talk about what we've read in the past week or so. The Sunday sermons will be taken from the sections scheduled for those Sundays.

Worship Through Service

Once again we will honor God with our labor this Labor Day weekend, offering our praise and worship in the form of service to others in our community.

We gather at 9am on this day for a prayer service. Then we divide into groups and then put our prayer into action as we work for our neighbors at the Palatine Township Food Pantry, the Winston Park School, the Sparrow's Nest, and the Night Ministry.

here are service projects available for EVERY age, mobility, and ability level! The Night Ministry project is at the church, for those unable to comfortably walk, stand, or leave the premises. The other projects may involve deep cleaning, gardening, sorting, moving, or other labor that our partner organizations are not able to get done when they are open on weekdays.

The organizations we work with in our neighborhood are so grateful for PCOP's hard work on a Sunday morning, as it makes it easier for them to serve. Worship Through Service is the gift that keeps on giving--to us, to our neighbors, and to the glory of God!

After we work for 2 hours, we return to church for a lunch of pizza and salad, and to share stories of how God worked through us today.

If you have questions, or if you are planning to visit to join in this work, please email the pastor and she will put you in contact with the people who can best assist you.

Outdoor Worship Service and Church Picnic

We'll worship in God's original sanctuary--the great and beautiful creation God gave us! You won't want to miss the bluegrass music or the inspiration that comes from the simple act of praising God and studying God's word out in God's world rather than inside our comfortable walls.

After worship, we'll move straight into picnic mode! The main dish will be provided by the Pentecost 2 team, and you're invited to bring a salad or other side to share. Old-fashioned pot-luck style, heavy on the Luck!

And, of course, like any good picnic, there will be a bouncy house and fun games and lots of laughter! See you there!
