Each year on Labor Day weekend, we spend our Sunday morning glorifying God with our labor, not only our songs of praise. Rather than a regular worship service, we worship through service, heading out into our neighborhood to spend the morning volunteering at local organizations, doing things that cannot be done during regular operating hours.
On Worship Through Service Sunday, we gather at 9am and have a prayer service, with singing, scripture, and prayer--and then we go out into the community to put our faith into action. Over the past several years, we have:
*painted, rearranged, and cleaned the Sparrow's Nest Thrift Store (supporting the Home of the Sparrow women's shelter).
*deep-cleaned the Palatine Township Food Pantry, offering clients there a safer and more pleasant shopping experience.
*cleaned up the gardens at Winston Campus School, making the entry to the school more welcoming.
*assembled goodie bags for the Night Ministry.
*prepared food for the day shelter at Journeys.
*gotten the homeless shelter downstairs ready for the season.
*written note cards for lunch bags for shelter guests, and for nursing home residents.
After working a couple of hours, we return to the church to share stories, give thanks, and eat together. Our lunch comes from Napoli Pizza, the closest restaurant to the church building--supporting a local business is another aspect of serving our community!
